From the Foreword by Marian Wright Edelman Africa’s Child is an unforgettable and searingly personal book….In the face of repeated obstacles and injustices, Nhambu continued to analyze the world around her with wit and a sharp sense of humor. Above all, as a very young child she decided one day that even if there was no other person in the world who loved and wanted her, she was going to love and care for herself—and that decision changed the course of her life. Africa’s Child is the story of a mixed-race girl growing up in the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania, East Africa. Raised in an orphanage with no knowledge of her origins or family, she endured abandonment, hardships, severe illnesses, and bullying. Her experiences as a child and teenager included physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, social stigma, and racial discrimination. Yet Nhambu tells her inspiring story with warmth and humor. Her questioning mind probes the African tribal realities and multi-cultural complexities that impacted her life both at the orphanage and schools run by German nuns as well as at an African high school with American nuns. Nhambu not only survived her childhood but triumphed. Her faith and resilience, along with a belief in learning and her tenacious pursuit of an education, sustained her through many challenges. Dance, especially African tribal dance, became the way she healed and nourished her spirit. Through the love and commitment of an American teacher she met in Africa, Nhambu was able to pursue her dream of education and a new life for herself. The first book in her three-part memoir ends as she is leaving Africa for university studies in America on a full scholarship. Maria Nhambu is the creator of Aerobics With Soul®, a fitness workout based on African dance. Web site MariaNhambu.com

Africa Child Dancing Soul Trilogy Volume 1 Maria Nhambu 9780997256109 Books

This is the story of a biracial child raised in an orphanage from age 4 days. It is an autobiography, part 1 of a projected trilogy. It is an amazing story and built on recollections, interviews, and reclaimed journals. It will engage you on every level as you follow Nhambu from infancy to Marian College in Tanzania to the plane for Minnesota. If you seek an example of resilience, look no further than this book. Nhambu’s history gets mixed up with the histories of Catholic orders in Tanganyika/Tanzania, cultural intersections of German missionaries, British colonialists, African dance, and dealing with randy males. For more information on this stellar individual go to [...]. The missionary order continues in TZ: [...]. Marian College is now Kilikala Girls High School. See [...]. I must say that I had a very strong emotional reaction to reading this book, and I couldn’t just put it on the self after having read it. I pickled it up and thumbed through it and carried it from room to room as if by this process of possession I could come in closer contact with this story which I think is most powerful as a story of making sense and making a life (it’s just that it more poignant when the central figure is an orphan).

Africa Child Dancing Soul Trilogy Volume 1 Maria Nhambu 9780997256109 Books Reviews

Her continued prayers to Baby Jesus for an opportunity to go to America were answered years after she was abandoned at an orphanage in East Africa by her parents. How did her heart survive as she endured a series of goodbyes, constant discipline and an attempt by some of the Sisters to weaken her self-esteem. Thank goodness Nhambu, along with her inner friend, realized the value of her studies. Her story woos you into how she managed to learn qualities, such as loyalty, independence, faith, open mindedness and generosity. Her inner strength and commitment to personal growth and integrity would earn her the path she dreamed of all of her early life. I will read this book again, in case I missed something the first time around.
So glad the author shared this story with the world. I enjoyed her perspective on all she lived through. At one time in my life I had the chance to transfer to Central High School in Mpls for their Magnet Program. If I had gone there, I could have had this amazing woman as one of my teachers. I can only imagine the impact she had on her students.
In her first published work, Maria Nhambu delights with her tale of coming of age. This engaging story of her life as an abandoned half-caste girl growing up in Tanzania, East Africa is all the more amazing because it is true. To walk with her through her journey is a privilege. Her story will inspire you as you realize all she was able to accomplish despite troubling odds. A testament to the dire need for self-love, perseverance, and the value of education and hard work. A highly recommended read for teenagers as they face decision making, and adults of any age as they reflect on and discern their own lives.
Maria's memoir captivates the reader from one episode to the next as she chronicles her young life in an African orphanage. Love and brutality alternate throughout Maria's experiences but her resourceful and loving spirit amazes and inspires. Her sense of humor, vulnerability and the honesty in which she shares her story make this one of my favorite reading experiences ever. There are images that linger in the reader's mind long after the book is finished. A remarkable woman and a most engaging book. I look forward to Book 2!

To get through this thing called life -Prince

I first heard of Maria when she was teaching Aerobics With Soul in Minneapolis. I was only able to experience Maria’s love of African dance & exercise through her videos. While videos are a valuable method of communication, they are not same as being up close and personal. Many important nuances can be lost. Even so, I was amazed at how infectious her inner grace and love of African dance shows through in the videos.

The childhood experiences of Maria Nhambu, are enough to break the spirit of many people. I often marvel at the tenacity of people who live through difficult times and maintain their positive outlook and continue to find and share joy. Maria Nhambu is one of these people.

Maria Nhambu’s book Africa’s Child is a memoir that shows a historical picture into the complexities of humanity in the country of Tanzania (and the world really). I highly recommend reading her story and I eagerly look forward to reading the next chapter of her life! Thank you Maria for sharing your life with us and inspiring us get through this thing called life with a bit more grace, joy and of course dance.
Africa's Child is the true story of a bi-racial child growing up in an orphanage in Tanzania who overcame every imaginable hardship in order to thrive and achieve her dreams of an education. The story is fascinating, interesting and a very colorful account of this child's dreams, the people involved in her life, good and bad, and her struggles in spite of many obstacles. I shared in her joy, tears and laughter along the way. I can't wait for the next two books of this trilogy to come out so that I can devour them as I did Africa's Child.
This story was beautifully written and the way she described her childhood made me feel as if I was right there with her, feeling her pain, wanting to be her friend, offer her comfort, love and be her cheerleader as she overcame things that I could never have imagined.
Maria Nhambu sounds like an outstanding woman and I wish her every success in life.
